The team

The firm has a specialist Construction Team that sits within its Commercial Real Estate Team.  The legal work of the team includes preparing and negotiating building contracts, professional appointments and development and other stakeholder agreements across a wide category of work, including major infrastructure, projects, commercial, residential, industrial and charities and also involves specialist construction input on wider real estate, corporate and finance transactions. 

The opportunity

The focus of this role will be to assist with a wide range of construction matters, acting for both commercial, institutional and private clients. The successful candidate will work in our Southampton office as part of the growing real estate team there and will work closely alongside our newest Construction partner, Claire Atkins, who brings a wealth of experience in non-contentious construction matters both regionally and nationally. They will also work closely with our Construction specialists in our London office, Tim Barwick and Karen Kirkham. The work will involve work nationally and regionally and presents the opportunity for a junior lawyer to be a key part in the exciting ongoing growth of this specialist team within the wider renowned real estate practice. The main responsibilities include:

  • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating a range of industry-specific and bespoke contracts between the different parties involved in a construction project.
  • Acting for a variety of clients including property developers, architects, contractors, sub-contractors, engineers, landowners, funders and more.
  • Working closely with legal professionals of other disciplines including finance, property and regulatory on multidisciplinary transactions including working on due diligence on sales, leases and finance transactions.
Who we are looking for
  • 2:1 Degree or higher preferred
  • 1+ years PQE in in construction law, focussing primarily on non-contentious construction work
  • A strong grounding in transactional construction work in the property and/or infrastructure related sectors
  • Enthusiasm for construction as a practice area, along with good technical knowledge and drafting skills
  • Familiarity with the various methods of construction procurement is essential, along with a robust knowledge of all the standard forms of construction contracts
  • Experience in advising on the construction aspects of agreements for lease, facility agreements, forward funding agreements and construction related security documents
